7 Things You Should Never Do With Aluminum Foil
What is Aluminum Foil?
Aluminum foil is aluminum made with thin metal blades less than 0.2 mm (7.9 mm) thick; thinner gauges down to 6 microns (0.24 mm) are also commonly used. Standard household foil is usually 0.016 mm (0.63 mile) thick and heavy duty household foil is usually 0.024 mm (0.94 mile) thick. Aluminum foil is flexible and easy to bend or wrap around objects. Thin foils are fragile and are sometimes laminated with other materials such as plastic or paper to make them stronger and more useful.
Aluminum foil has many uses in the kitchen and beyond, from lining casseroles to even cleaning grills. But this is not absolutely true.
There are some people we don't recommend using aluminum foil, either because they're not effective, or they're just downright dangerous. We're not suggesting you toss this versatile kitchen wrap, but make sure you're not making any of these common foil mistakes.
1. Do not use aluminum foil to bake cookies.
When it comes to baking cookies, aluminum foil is the best parchment paper. This is because aluminum is very conductive, which means that any part of the dough that is in direct contact with the foil will be exposed to more concentrated heat than the rest of the dough. What you end up with is a cookie with a browned or even burnt bottom and an undercooked top.
2. Do not put aluminum foil in the microwave.
This probably goes without saying, but a little reminder never hurts: According to the FDA, you should never put aluminum foil in the microwave because microwaves reflect off the aluminum, causing uneven cooking of food and possible damage to the oven (including sparks, flames, and even fire).
3. Do not line the bottom of the oven with aluminum foil.
Lining the bottom of your oven with aluminum foil might sound like a good way to catch leaks and avoid a major oven cleanup, but the folks at Reynolds don't recommend it: "To avoid possible heat damage to your oven, we don't recommend lining the bottom of your oven with aluminum foil ." Instead of putting a sheet of aluminum foil on the oven floor, place a sheet over the grill to catch any drips (make sure the sheet is only a few inches larger than your baking sheet to allow for proper heat circulation). You can also keep a sheet of foil on the lowest oven rack at all times and replace the foil as necessary so there is always a layer of handling protection against spills.
4. Don't use aluminum foil to store leftovers.
Leftovers will keep in the fridge for three to four days, but aluminum foil isn't ideal for storing them. Foil is not airtight, meaning no matter how tightly you wrap it, some air will get in. This allows bacteria to grow faster. Instead, store leftovers in airtight storage containers or food storage bags.
5. Don't toss aluminum foil after one use.
Turns out, Grandma was right. Foil can certainly be reused. If it's not too crumpled or soiled, you can wash aluminum foil by hand or in the top rack of the dishwasher to get a few extra miles out of each sheet. When you decide it's time to retire a sheet of aluminum foil, it can be recycled.
6. Don't bake potatoes in aluminum foil.
Think twice before wrapping your spuds in foil. Aluminum foil does trap heat, but it traps moisture, too. This means your potato will end up more soggy and steamed as opposed to baked and crisp.
7. Don't just use the shiny side on the foil.
Unless you're using non-stick foil, it doesn't make a difference which side of the foil you use. According to Reynolds, it's okay to keep food on the dull shiny side of the foil. The difference in appearance has to do with the milling process, where one side comes into contact with the mill's highly polished steel rollers.
